Words Unsaid

The table was laid with food for two
He had his share staring at the empty chair
After he rose, she sat and ate in silence
Reminiscing when there was laughter and cheer

The silence now no longer companiable
Words exchanged were the cursory ‘yes’ or ‘no’ 
He looked at her and said in an accusing manner,
“Where did we fail, isn’t there no more love?”

“No more drives, or watching late night movies
You on your side of the bed, staring into your device
I’ve adjusted and accepted our relationship fate 
Doomed it is with the passage of time,” she said

“Can we work on it; can we salvage it?” he asked
“Now tis too late, the bridges are broken” she replied
Neither wanting to work; letting silence take over
Willing to spend life in a nonverbal companionship
